The Ministry is responsible for the following policy areas:

The "Energy" division is assigned to the Technology and Energy Department includes among other things responsibilities for energy policy, energy law, competition law, price control, energy efficiency (energy saving and efficient use of energy), renewable energies (wind power, biomass, solar energy, geothermal energy), municipal and regional energy policy, energy strategy.  

The Ministry is a project partner in the BEEN project. Acting as external consultants for the Ministry are the Energieagentur Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel, and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für zeitgemäßes Bauen e.V. in Kiel.
